Witness the Magic of
Sunset & Bioluminescence
Watch the sun dip below the Puerto Vallarta horizon in a burst of color, then stay for the main event as the water comes alive with light.
If you’ve heard about the ocean glowing at night and wondered how it happens,
you’re not alone. Many guests ask about the science behind the light and the
best way to experience it before joining the Sunset & Bioluminescence Adventure.
This natural phenomenon can be observed in only a few places, and Los Arcos
de Mismaloya offers some of the best conditions in the region.
On dark nights, especially when there’s little moonlight, the water inside
the caves begins to glow with every movement, creating the feeling of swimming
through a sea of stars.
Bioluminescence is a natural glow produced by microscopic marine organisms when the water is disturbed, creating a soft blue-green shimmer in the dark sea.
Dark, moonless nights and warmer waters offer the best conditions, especially in summer and early fall, though it can appear year-round.
Bioluminescence is difficult for standard phones to capture. It is a rare experience best enjoyed “in the moment” rather than through a screen.
Los Arcos Marine Ecological Sanctuary is one of the few places in Mexico where bioluminescence can be seen, thanks to its protected, low-light waters.
The water lights up with brief blue or turquoise flashes and trails as marine life moves below the surface.
